CD Projeckt RED has recently confirmed that their seminal open world RPG The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt which came out way back in 2015, is about to receive a surprise new expansion named Songs of the Past sometimes in 2027. For a game that originally came out over a decade ago, the announcement of a new expansion to the story and the characters designed to add more life into it in many ways, has clearly set a new precedent in the industry as it’s incredibly rare and proves just how much beloved and celebrated The Witcher 3 really is for most players out there.
However, according to CD Projekt’s joint-CEO Michal Nowakowski, the Polish studio had originally thought to release Songs of the Past sometimes in this year but later decided to shift the date into 2027 as it would allow for “the best possible result.”
“We had a moment where our plans assumed that Songs of the Past would be released this year, but we decided, together with the dev team, that the game would be released in 2027 to achieve the best possible result from the consumers’ standpoint, which, in the end, is the ultimate thing that matters,” he said.
Another CD Projekt executive, Piotr Nielubowicz, also said that although the new expansion will release in next year, the studio still has multiple unannounced projects slated for this year which sounds really exciting: “We have some other content currently at an advanced production phase–and while obviously not on the same scale as the expansion, we still plan to release it this year,” he said.
As we already know by now, the next mainline entry in the series is The Witcher 4 which features Ciri as a new monster hunter, a sharp departure from the past three titles where it was Geralt who was the main protagonist. It’s likely that the upcoming expansion is a way for the devs to bridge the narrative gap between The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt and Witcher 4, focusing on Ciri’s journey to become a full fledged monster hunter from being more of a side character in Witcher 3.
In other news of the venerable RPG series, it’s been confirmed that The Witcher 4 will be part of a whole new trilogy that will be released in a span of 6 years.
