New Details Revealed About PS5’s Upcoming Dolby Atmos Support

A few days ago Sony detailed their latest PlayStation 5 beta software, which included a number of quality of life improvements and support for Dolby Atmos.

Support for compatible Dolby Atmos-enabled audio devices

3D Audio powered by Tempest 3D AudioTech can now be enjoyed by those who own compatible Dolby Atmos-enabled HDMI devices such as soundbars, TVs or home theater systems. Tempest 3D AudioTech specifically renders to the Dolby Atmos audio devices in use – including overhead channels – allowing for even greater levels of immersion in the audioscapes of PS5 games.

  • To turn on Dolby Atmos, go to [Settings] > [Sound] > [Audio Output] > [Audio Format (Priority)], and then select [Dolby Atmos].

Shortly after Twitter user LoicJohann asked PlayStation’s Senior Sound Design Supervisor, Loïc Couthier, whether this enhancement is automatic or something that requires a patch.

According to Couthier, all games that currently support 3D audio will support Dolby Atmos in some capacity. He went on to note customized Dolby Atmos mixes will unsurprisingly require a patch. While it’s impossible to say how many games will end up supporting the feature, it’s good to see the option will be present. Especially if this results in further inclusion given Xbox Series already supports it.
