Meta surprised everyone by announcing their popular Meta Quest 2 will see a price increase in Aug. This includes the 128GB model, which will go from $299.99 to $399.99, along with the 256GB model seeing the same $100 price increase, bringing it to $499.99. The same article also mentions a price increase for Meta Quest 2 accessories and refurbished units, but no details were given.
According to the announcement, the change was due to logistics and increasing costs across the board.
At the same time, the costs to make and ship our products have been on the rise. By adjusting the price of Quest 2, we can continue to grow our investment in groundbreaking research and new product development that pushes the VR industry to new heights.
Meta
Despite this change, Meta reaffirmed their belief in VR and the often mentioned Metaverse.
We have an ambitious VR hardware roadmap, beginning with the launch of our high-end headset, Project Cambria, later this year. And we plan to ship new generations of Meta Quest after that. At Reality Labs Research, we have teams dedicated to advancing the state of the art in VR displays, audio, incredibly lifelike avatars, haptics, wrist-based interfaces, and more. And on the content front, we have a robust lineup of exciting titles coming to Meta Quest 2, including Ghostbusters VR, Among Us VR, The Walking Dead: Saints & Sinners – Chapter 2: Retribution, BONELAB, and NFL PRO ERA—VR’s first officially-licensed NFL game.
Meta
While some might be put off by the change, it isn’t all bad. Starting next month a Facebook account is no longer needed to use the headset, though you’ll still need a Meta account. Along with that, anyone who purchases a Meta Quest 2 from Aug. 1 to Dec. 31 and activates an account by Jan. 31, 2023, will be able to download Beat Saber “at no additional cost for 14 days following activation.”
