It seems the upcoming modernized remake of Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis is going to rewrite some of the official canon of it’s iconic protagonist as well, as it’s been confirmed that the events of the game is set to take place after the survivor trilogy of titles which was a franchise reboot by developer Crystal Dynamics. In a recent interview with IGN, Jeff Adams, Experience Director for Crystal Dynamics, has stated that Legacy of Atlantis will be a part of the overall tapestry of the Tomb Raider saga, but perhaps in an unexpected way.
When asked if the remake is it’s own self-contained adventure placed apart from the greater arc of Tomb Raider, the dev answered that it’s not, and then went on to clarify where exactly the upcoming title stands in the overall chronicles of Tomb Raider:
“The events of the Survivor Series did occur, and this is the same Lara, but we are finding her at this point in her career.”
Now this will obviously open up tons of new questions in the community as to whether all of the titles in the survivor trilogy are canon too or perhaps more importantly, how and when does Lara from those titles transition into the upcoming remake, and more. Hopefully Legacy of Atlantis will answer many of these questions in a satisfying and faithful way while setting up the next mainline entry in the franchise which is Tomb Raider: Catalyst.
The brand new trailer which came out during this year’s State of Play event briefly outlined the story of Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis while showcasing several gameplay sections like the puzzle platforming, an underwater segment, some brief combat situations where the protagonist makes a stealth-but-not-silent takedown and much more.
Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis is confirmed to be released on February 12, 2027 in three different editions and a 48-hour early access pre-order bonus.
