Square Enix has confirmed that Final Fantasy VII Revelation, the final entry in the remake trilogy, will feature an exclusive “Versatility Mode” on the PlayStation 5 Pro. Designed to deliver a targeted 60 frames per second at 4K resolution, the setting leverages Sony’s proprietary PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR) upscaling technology. While the game launches across multiple platforms on April 8, 2027, this enhancement positions the PS5 Pro as the premium console environment for the conclusion of the long-running saga.
The newly revealed Versatility Mode bridges the gap between traditional performance and fidelity profiles, allowing players to explore the game’s expansive world without choosing between image clarity and high frame rates. Game director Naoki Hamaguchi noted that PSSR upscaling plays a central role in maintaining consistent performance, particularly across demanding sequences such as seamless open-world exploration and Highwind airship travel. For base PS5 hardware, standard options remain available: a 30 FPS Graphics Mode in native 4K, along with “Sharp” and “Soft” 60 FPS Performance modes.
The news comes alongside fresh details regarding the scope of the project, which Square Enix promises will cover significantly more ground than its predecessor, Final Fantasy VII Rebirth. Players can expect to visit major locations like Wutai and Mideel, both modeled for full exploration in modern high definition for the first time. However, this visual scale comes at a cost, as the title carries a massive storage footprint of approximately 200GB across all platforms.
With Sony continuing to refine PSSR through recent PS5 system software updates—including a system-level image enhancement toggle—the technical foundation for Revelation reflects a broader industry shift toward AI-assisted rendering. Whether players choose the enhanced PS5 Pro experience, standard console hardware, or PC, the upcoming release represents one of the most technically ambitious projects in modern RPG development.
