GTA 6 May Skip First-Person Camera at Launch

Grand Theft Auto 6 is poised to launch without a dedicated first-person perspective, according to recent statements from industry content creators invited to preview the title at Rockstar North.

Brazilian content creator Davy Jones shared details following a behind-the-scenes look at the upcoming title, revealing that Rockstar Games is prioritizing a third-person camera perspective to highlight the game’s dynamic animations and character presentation. In a breakdown shared on YouTube, it was noted that while players can still switch to an aim-down-sights perspective during gunplay, a full first-person mode covering general exploration, driving, and narrative sequences is not expected to be ready for the game’s initial release.

This structural choice follows historical patterns for the franchise. The original console release of Grand Theft Auto V in 2013 launched strictly as a third-person experience. Rockstar introduced the first-person perspective only when bringing the game to expanded platforms in late 2014, requiring significant adjustments to vehicle cockpit interiors, character animations, and movement mechanics to accommodate the shift.

Developing a seamless first-person camera within an open-world environment requires tailored visual assets, specific field-of-view adjustments, and alternative collision systems. By focusing initial resources on a traditional third-person setup, Rockstar appears focused on delivering precise movement mechanics and visual fidelity across the vast region of Leonida.

Rockstar Games has not published an official statement regarding camera options for launch day. However, given the studio’s history of post-launch technical expansions, a complete first-person mode could arrive in subsequent software updates after Grand Theft Auto 6 debuts.
