Riot Games Rolls Back Faulty Parental Controls After Locking Out League of Legends and Valorant Veterans

Riot Games has been forced to roll back its newly deployed parental control system for League of Legends after a botched rollout erroneously restricted adult players and locked veterans out of their own accounts. The security feature, which launched on July 15, 2026 across League of Legends, Valorant, and Teamfight Tactics (TFT) on PC, was designed to let parents manage their children’s gaming habits. Instead, it triggered a widespread technical glitch that automatically activated safety protocols across the board, completely breaking the social functions of unsuspecting players regardless of age.

New parental controls are rolling out for @LeagueOfLegends, @VALORANT, and @TFT (PC) in the US.

The implementation was intended to provide a straightforward suite of moderation tools, enabling guardians to disable or restrict voice and text chat to friends, block incoming and outgoing friend requests, and entirely bar access to specific Riot titles. However, immediately following the update, the publisher’s community channels were flooded with complaints from long-time players who found themselves silenced. Adult users who had already established their age on their Riot profiles reported that the parental lock had been turned on by default, with one player noting that their 16-year-old account had been restricted with no apparent way to reverse the changes.

The backlash was particularly sharp within the Valorant community, where critics questioned the heavy-handed nature of the feature for a game already rated Teen by the ESRB and 16+ by PEGI. Further exacerbating the issue, the automated email verification system required to adjust or lift these parental boundaries reportedly failed to function for a significant portion of the user base. In response to the growing community outcry, Riot Games released a statement acknowledging that the system had improperly targeted legitimate League of Legends accounts, confirming an immediate rollback of the feature on that client while engineers work on a fix.

This infrastructure misstep comes at an awkward time for Riot Games, as the studio prepares to launch its highly anticipated League of Legends Classic game mode later this month. Designed to capitalize on nostalgia by reverting the MOBA to its Season 3 state—complete with legacy item sets, the original Summoner’s Rift layout, and pre-rework Champion kits—the developers now face the task of smoothing over this administrative headache before the massive influx of returning players arrives.
