CD Projekt Red joint CEO Michal Nowakowski has confirmed that The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt will receive a third major expansion in 2027 titled “Songs of the Past.” Speaking during a recent company earnings call, Nowakowski revealed that the upcoming content is designed to bridge the gap between the 2015 RPG and its highly anticipated sequel, effectively serving as an indirect prologue to The Witcher 4.
The announcement positions “Songs of the Past” as a narrative stepping stone for the franchise, following the critical success of the game’s previous expansions, Hearts of Stone and Blood and Wine. While Nowakowski noted that the DLC is “not a prologue in a verbatim way,” his comments suggest the narrative will establish the context for Geralt of Rivia stepping away from the central spotlight to make room for the next saga. With The Witcher 4 having entered full production in late 2024, the expansion is strategically timed to sustain player interest during a lengthy development cycle that could stretch until 2028 or later.
However, the ambitious scope of the expansion comes with strict platform limitations that will exclude a significant portion of the game’s original player base. CD Projekt Red has confirmed that “Songs of the Past” will skip the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One entirely, launching exclusively on modern hardware to leverage superior technical capabilities.
Legacy Nintendo hardware is also absent from the initial platform rollout, though speculation points toward a potential release on Nintendo’s unannounced successor to the Switch. Given CD Projekt Red’s history of robust post-launch support and optimization, “Songs of the Past” aims to deliver a definitive conclusion to Geralt’s journey while setting the stage for the studio’s planned multi-game roadmap.
