Blizzard Entertainment has finally come clean about its long-awaited crossover with Hasbro’s legendary G.I. Joe franchise, and it has a whole set of special new cosmetic skins for Overwatch 2 to show for it. The crossover brings with it five well-detailed skins that reimagine Overwatch 2‘s popular heroes as G.I. Joe franchise characters, giving players something new to ogle.
Scheduled to launch on July 1 and run through July 14, the temporary event adds iconic G.I. Joe characters to the hero shooter. Among the showcase updates, stealthy Genji will be assuming the sneaky vigilante role of Snake Eyes, and Freja will be playing the expert intelligence officer role of Scarlett. For Cobra, the sexy Widowmaker is supplanted by the deadly Baroness, the formidable Doomfist by the affluent arms dealer Destro, and the nefarious Reaper as a dominant force, Cobra Commander.
Aside from the superficial alterations, these crossovers are designed to deliver an integrated thematic experience. Every skin pack will likely include a set of matching in-game rewards such as special voice lines, dynamic intro highlights, victory celebration poses, and other cosmetic materials that further enhance the G.I. Joe experience in the game. Though official pricing information is not available, standalone skin packs will reportedly cost as high as previous Overwatch 2 crossovers, with a Mega Bundle that packages these new items into a bundle.
In celebration of releases of the skins, players can participate in an in-game event. Through doing all sorts of challenges in Quick Play, Competitive, or Stadium modes, players will get an opportunity to gain unique rewards such as signature voice lines, themed sprays, a G.I. Joe-themed weapon charm, and a nice 25,000 Battle Pass XP boost in Season 17. This crossover is an important one for Overwatch 2, bringing its colorful hero roster together with G.I. Joe’s proud legacy.
