Despite the heavier price tag of $100, more people are actually pre-ordering the Ultimate Edition of the upcoming GTA 6, than the vanilla $80 Standard Edition. In a recent interview with CNBC, Strauss Zelnick, the CEO of Rockstar’s parent company Take-Two Interactive, has said that players are buying the pricier Ultimate Edition more than the Standard version. However, it might also be due to the fact that only the die-hard fans of the Grand Theft Auto series are the ones currently pre-ordering and the more casual audience may go for the Standard Edition instead, according to him.
“Actually, it is skewing more to the premium edition,” stated Zelnick when the interviewer suggested that pre-order numbers of GTA 6 could be around equal across both Standard and the Ultimate editions. “That might be a reflection of the fact that the most avid consumers are the ones who are pre-ordering now.”
The CEO was also asked about the open world behemoth getting any sort of Holiday discounts as it’s currently scheduled to release just before Black Friday and Christmas, however, as he said, there may not be any kind of steep discounts on GTA 6 for quite a while, as it’s predecessor GTA 5’s pricing had also remained unchanged for years. But it’s ultimately up to the individual storefronts if they wish to provide the game for a reduced price during the holidays.
“We obviously establish our pricing, and storefronts can do what they wish,” he said. “We don’t have any capability to control that. So if they reduce their price, they reduce their margin on the sale. There are situations where certain retailers will price down to drive demand for other things they will sell. I can’t tell you what will happen. I will tell you we preserved our pricing on Grand Theft Auto 5 for a very long time, much longer than a standard release of an entertainment property.”
An extended look at the upcoming GTA 6 will be showcased on Netflix this August 27 and will be made available for everyone to see on Youtube later that day. So if you have a subscription to Netflix, you’ll be able to get a first look at some of the features of the most anticipated videogame of all time when it premiers on the platform at 3 PM ET on August 27, and will be available on Rockstar’s own Youtube channel at 9 PM ET on the same day.
GTA 6 is currently slated to launch for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S on November 19, 2026.
