Demonology Warlocks Move Away From the Felguard in World of Warcraft

Demonology Warlocks are abandoning their signature Felguard minion following a series of balance adjustments in World of Warcraft’s Curse of Ula’tek patch. Recent updates to class mechanics have fundamentally altered demon scaling, leaving the long-standing companion behind in favor of alternative options that yield better overall performance in high-end content.

In patch 12.1, Blizzard delivered numeric adjustments across the Warlock roster, granting significant buffs to secondary demons like the Succubus and Felhunter—roughly a 350 percent damage increase—while capping the Felguard’s increase at around 20 percent. As a result, the Succubus now consistently outperforms the Felguard in raw single-target damage by up to two percent. Meanwhile, the Felhunter continues to offer critical utility through faster interrupts, giving both pets a clear edge depending on the encounters players face.

The shift extends beyond raw pet statistics into talent tree optimization. By dropping the dedicated Felguard talent node entirely, players free up valuable talent points to invest in Practiced Rituals and Dreadlash. The former grants a two percent boost to total Mastery, which raises overall DPS for the entire spec, while the latter significantly enhances Dreadstalkers. This talent pathing yields higher total damage output than relying on the traditional Felguard setup.

Ever since its introduction in The Burning Crusade, the Felguard has stood as the defining identity for Demonology Warlocks through multiple class redesigns. While Affliction and Destruction have frequently shifted in viability, Demonology’s reliance on its premier demon remained constant. With the current meta prioritizing alternate pet choices and talent synergy, players running high-level mythic dungeons and raids are officially moving on from the iconic minion for the foreseeable future.
