Xbox Game Studios Steps In to Publish Physint Following PlayStation's Sudden Exit

Xbox Game Studios has officially acquired the publishing rights for Hideo Kojima’s upcoming stealth action project, Physint, rescuing the title after Sony Interactive Entertainment ended its publishing deal with Kojima Productions. The unexpected move shifts one of the most anticipated auteur-driven projects in recent memory away from PlayStation’s lineup and into the Xbox library.

Physint was first introduced as a major cornerstone of Kojima’s return to the tactical stealth genre—a return fans had been awaiting since the director concluded his work on the Metal Gear series over a decade ago. Initially announced as a joint effort with Sony, the project spent several years in active development before Sony quietly chose to terminate its partnership. Recognizing the opportunity, Xbox Game Studios moved quickly to secure the publishing contract, ensuring that development on the title could continue uninterrupted.

You may have seen a recent article that mentions KOJIMA PRODUCTIONS, speculating on the reasons for the change in publishing partners for PHYSINT.

In response to widespread online speculation regarding the breakup, Kojima Productions released an official statement on X addressing the studio’s status and its current relationship with PlayStation. While acknowledging that Sony’s exit presented serious challenges and significant strategic implications, the studio clarified that it remains in a healthy, financially stable position. Kojima Productions also noted that its working relationship with PlayStation remains strong and amicable despite the sudden change in publisher, urging fans to approach unverified rumors about sales figures and studio profitability with healthy skepticism.

With Xbox now financing and publishing the title, Physint is broadly expected to launch as an Xbox ecosystem exclusive across Xbox consoles and PC. Casting announcements are already beginning to surface under the new partnership, with actor Bill Skarsgård recently confirmed to take on the game’s main role. Development is actively moving forward under the Xbox Game Studios banner, though neither Kojima Productions nor Microsoft has provided a target release window at this time.
