The giant Sony is backing down from Physical Media as a whole. With no proper successor, it seems that the dark ages have begun for the giant. After revealing the PS5 Pro having no disc drive, it seems that we are heading towards a no ownership future. We at Infinite Start will start theorizing what will happen.

You will own nothing

Physical media has been with us since the early days of gaming. Be it Cartridges or Floppy Disks, it was common to store your games something physical and portable. With the advent of online gaming however, stores like Steam opted for different methods. Digital distribution became the norm to supposedly lower the physical cost of games. However, as we can see, digital purchases are also terribly overpriced. Our boys at Sony decided to cling to these nefarious methods, and now Sony is backing down from physical media.

To top all of this, gamers don’t really own their games anymore. Whatever you buy from any online platform is merely a license to get access to the game. Very few only services provide the opportunity to properly own your games, free of DRM. In the dark age of non-ownership, we are basically just renting stuff for a steep price. There is hope to this dark situation however, many people are starting to backup their media frequently. After hearing the Sony is backing down from physical media, people are getting ready to save their games.

Many initiatives have been taken legally to stop this kind of shady business, Ubisoft has been hit by an European lawsuit to over closing their live service games. Live Service games have been used for many years as rug pull schemes, by not telling costumers how long they will be online. This reality can be avoided if more people start getting their games via different means. People might consider doing backups of their games whenever they can to properly own them for once.
