No Man’s Sky is a great game, having released on PC in 2016 means that the game just turned 10 years recently. A trailer was dropped to commemorate this event, and the fact that this game has been in development for so long shows the amount of dedication and love put into it. There is a ton of things to talk about this game, but everyone remembers back when it released in 2016, it really felt like some sort of scam because it over promised. But then, after multiple updates, patches, and more things added into the game, all for free may I add, it became a great project.
No Man’s Sky is huge
You can explore a vast universe of procedurally generated maps and creatures, not to mention that all of this is truly unique for each player. This is way before the whole “AI” slop crisis started happening, showing that people can make great things without the need of being an artist, you could just dedicate yourself to learning the ins and outs of procedural generation, making some assets yourself, and then let the system bring variations efficiently. Not only do you get controlled output with your own vision, but you can also create truly unique worlds for each player.
All of this does not need any fancy system that guzzles water and pollutes the environment, its just simple maths that can be learned everywhere if you look hard enough. No Man’s Sky might be the ultimate procedural generation game due to how much it leverages the technique, and yet it still has an aesthetic to it, something made by people despite its multiple variations being iterated by code. The most wild part is how they actually managed to make all of this work, which is the biggest selling point of No Man’s Sky.
