Activision and Paramount Pictures have confirmed that their Call of Duty movie will be taking place in the iconic Modern Warfare Universe, as the crew behind the upcoming adaptation have said during the Culture Panel at Fanatics Fest in New York City (reported by Variety). The news was unveiled by Call of Duty movie director and co-writer Peter Berg who made an appearance at the event, however, they are silent on any more specifics regarding the plot of the upcoming movie.
Although, if you take a good look at the franchise over the years, it’s clear that the Modern Warfare series of titles have been far more iconic and memorable than the Black Ops series from Call of Duty, and a large of it is due to the range of unique characters that have been in the series since Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare. Characters like the now-fan-favorite Captain Price, Soap, Ghost and series villain Vladimir Makarov all feature compelling story arcs and depth, easily lending themselves as huge draws to the movie among longtime fans of the franchise.
However, Berg didn’t mention if the Call of Duty movie will retread familiar narrative beats from the Modern Warfare series of games or whether the plot will be completely new, although that seems more likely as the series offers lots of room for compelling narrative threads via it’s popular characters and modern day setting.
Meanwhile this year’s Call of Duty title is going to be Modern Warfare 4 which will feature multiple storylines in it’s single player campaign mode and one of them sees players taking on the role of Private Park, a young South Korean soldier set to experience live combat for the first time in a routine mission that quickly escalates into a full-scale invasion by North Korea.
Another branch of the main campaign in the upcoming Modern Warfare 4 is centered around a rather vengeful Captain Price who is undergoing a “personal war from the shadows as he stays one step ahead of those hunting him.” Also, “as Price’s off-book mission collides with the forces behind the invasion, the war spreads beyond anyone’s control,” a line from the upcoming game’s story description states.
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 is set to launch on October 23 for PC, PS5, Xbox Series X|S and the Nintendo Switch 2.
