Square Enix to Pull the Plug on Final Fantasy 7: Ever Crisis This October

Final Fantasy 7: Ever Crisis is officially shutting down on October 6, 2026, bringing a sudden end to Square Enix’s free-to-play mobile RPG after just three years of service. The publisher announced the decision on social media, explaining that it could no longer sustain the level of service that players expect from the title. In-app purchases for the game’s premium currency, Red Crystals, have already been deactivated effective immediately, though active players will be allowed to spend their remaining balances until the servers are permanently taken offline.

Important: End of Service (1/5)

After careful consideration, we have decided to end the service of FINAL FANTASY VII EVER CRISIS on Oct. 6, 2026, at 11:00 PM PDT. Thank you for playing the game over the years.

Launched in September 2023 on mobile devices before expanding to PC via Steam later that year, Ever Crisis was pitched as a comprehensive retelling of the entire Final Fantasy 7 timeline. The project consolidated stories from the original 1997 classic, Crisis Core, Before Crisis, Advent Children, and Dirge of Cerberus into a unified episodic format. It also featured The First Soldier, an original narrative arc detailing Sephiroth’s early history. Despite its narrative ambitions and high-fidelity combat visuals, the title ultimately struggled to maintain long-term momentum in a highly competitive live-service market.

Existing players will still have a few months to say their goodbyes. Square Enix confirmed that planned story updates and in-game events will continue to roll out right up until the final October deadline. However, once the designated time arrives, player account data will be completely wiped from the database, rendering all unlocked characters, weapons, and progress permanently inaccessible.

This closure marks yet another contraction in Square Enix’s mobile and live-service catalog, which has seen numerous high-profile cancellations in recent years. Interestingly, the publisher also recently announced the upcoming termination of its cloud-based Kingdom Hearts titles on the Nintendo Switch for June 2027, though those will be replaced by native versions. For Final Fantasy enthusiasts, the loss of Ever Crisis closes a unique chapter of lore delivery, though the community’s primary focus will now inevitably shift toward the upcoming mainline trilogy conclusion, Final Fantasy 7 Revelation, which is currently slated for a Spring 2027 release.
