Activision and Raven Software have officially confirmed that Black Ops Royale is being removed from Call of Duty: Warzone. The decision, quietly slipped into the patch notes for the upcoming Season 6 update, gives the experimental mode a total lifespan of just seven months before it is permanently pulled from the rotation at the end of the seasonal cycle.
First introduced in March as part of Call of Duty: Black Ops 7 Season 2, Black Ops Royale was pitched as a modern homage to Black Ops 4‘s popular Blackout mode. It deliberately stripped away foundational Warzone features like custom loadout drops, the Gulag, and Buy Stations, forcing players to rely on ground-loot weapons, rarity upgrades, and classic mobility tools like Wingsuits and Grappling Hooks. While the stripped-down format eliminated the need to grind weapon levels, it ultimately struggled to maintain long-term momentum within the broader ecosystem.
The announcement has highlighted a growing rift in the player base. Backers appreciated the mode’s reliance on traditional battle royale mechanics, ground-loot progression, and level playing fields. However, critics noted that dividing the community across multiple large-scale playlists led to severe matchmaking issues. As player numbers dropped over recent months, lobbies increasingly relied on AI bots to fill matches, frustrating competitive players and degrading the overall experience.
With the release of Season 6 on September 17, players have one final window to clear out exclusive rewards, including the “Crimson Omen” and “Contagion” weapon camos tied to winstreak challenges. The departure comes as Activision prepares to streamline its playlists ahead of the upcoming Modern Warfare 4 integration, effectively ending another short-lived experiment in Warzone‘s evolving landscape.
