Massive Bungie layoffs are being done to restructure the company, and this is happening during a time where they need their talent the most. However, all of the big brains inside the company seem to be departing, as the highest earners in the company are those who get cut first no matter how indispensable they are. This is catastrophic, and it will potentially cause Bungie to just collapse in some years, if it somehow does not collapse now. Marathon wasn’t a success, to the point that Sony just revoked marketing budget for the game, and now these layoffs might be the final nail in the coffin.
Massive Bungie layoffs are bad
Axing the people who pretty much keeps the company standing is a very bold move to do, and no matter what kind of restructuring strategy you plan it always ends in a worse situation than what you were in. It is clear that all of these layoffs and the removal of talent is merely done to please shareholders and other C-Suite across the industry, rather than for the sake of making things better. When leadership changes, it signifies that the previous owner of the company has jumped from a sinking ship.
There is no way to recover from this, cause losing years of experience down the drain to mismanagement always comes with a big price after the cuts. I would be surprised if Bungie manages to survive after 2027, or if Marathon ends up living after 2026 too, there’s too many things wrong at Bungie at the moment. Instead of cutting so many people, they should have actually listened at what the people was saying, because respecting your potential customer is always a more powerful move than making cuts and cancelling projects, unless those projects are undesired. Alas, time is ticking for Bungie.
