AI is largely seen as something that’s hugely detrimental for the industry which can cause a significant decline in the overall human output, even leading to the possibility of layoffs. However, according to EA executive Laura Miele, the president of enterprise development at the company, there has been a rise in creativity after the developers have embraced AI tools in studios. In a recent interview with The Game Business, she was asked whether AI can help speed up the overall development process and to which she stated affirmatively.
She also added that one of her aims is to remove frictions in the overall workflow, and AI has helped in those situations remarkably:
“I always have kind of wanted to be a hero to them and help them create career-defining experiences. And I think that AI–what I’ve seen–how AI has enabled removing friction from our pipelines and our tools and our workflows, has been pretty exciting,” she said. “It’s removed some tedium out of their jobs.”
Miele also mentioned that she has witnessed a rise in overall creativity along with faster timelines as a direct result of AI integration:
“So we’re seeing it. I think there is a real rise of creativity that comes from removing some of the tedious tasks out of development,” she said.
While it’s true that AI can boost the speed of some of the tedious and routine parts in the development of video games, it also makes it easier to reduce a large part of the overall workforce while maintaining the same level of output and as huge companies have placed profit over people several times in the past, they have all the incentive for doing so. And that’s why, implementation of AI remains one of the most divisive topics in the industry, at least for now.
AI is steadily creeping up to many aspects of game development, with several industry veterans believing that the new technology has a place in the non-creative parts of making videogames.
