A reliable industry insider has claimed that Xbox’s new disc-to-digital service which is named Positron, is “expected to be revealed” this month and will allow you to convert tons of your older Xbox disc-based games into all-digital catalogues that can live forever in your gaming library. After Sony’s industry-altering decision to stop production of discs from 2028 was revealed in last month, Xbox’s plans to bring a new tool for preserving many older, disc based titles in the form of digital licenses had surfaced and it may be officially revealed pretty soon.

The report of Positron being out in August is revealed by Windows Central, which indicate that Microsoft is currently at the stage of finalizing “some of the finer details” before making an official announcement. The report also suggests that not every single title from different eras of Xbox such as the Xbox 360, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S would be supported cause of pending licensing agreements with different publishers, although a significant part of the overall catalogue of games will be included.

To go into more detail, Xbox’s Positron is a tool aimed at creating digital licenses or versions of older, disc-based titles and helping to preserve those games in the form of digital editions. And to use Positron, you need to insert the original disc, install the game and load it on your console and provided you have a Microsoft account, you’ll receive the same game as a digital version in your library. Moreover, if any of your disc-based titles for the Series X|S consoles supports Xbox Play Anywhere, you’ll receive a PC version of that game as well, but only if you have a Microsoft account associated with those titles.

This upcoming feature also indirectly makes it clear that we’re indeed witnessing the demise of discs in the videogame industry, across both Playstation and Xbox and this is going to be the future of the medium from now on.

However, as many older discs can eventually run into various technical issues, the option to have them on the digital format means more reliability of accessing them, provided the publisher doesn’t de-list the games in the future.
