Marvel’s Wolverine Could Have Microtransactions, Based on it’s Recently Unveiled ESRB Rating

While the upcoming Marvel’s Wolverine from Insomniac Games won’t feature any multiplayer content at all and is described as a single-player experience similar to the Spider-Man titles, the game may have some degree of microtransactions according to a line in it’s official ESRB description. The ESRB rating for Wolverine was revealed recently and is as gory as you’d expect from the gameplay videos released so far, but it also has this particular entry which states: “Also includes In-Game Purchases,” so it’s currently up in the air as to what those purchases may turn out to be.

But even though the definition of in-game purchases typically mean microtransaction, Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 had mentioned ‘in-game purchases’ too, and what it had turned out was the option for transitioning or upgrading to the more expensive Digital Deluxe Edition of the game even if someone had bought the Standard Edition first. So Wolverine could have similar options of upgrading into the Deluxe edition from the vanilla Standard edition of the game, or we could see extra suits and other kinds of cosmetic in-game items in Wolverine that requires you to pay real money.

Microtransactions are largely divisive across the industry and as all the previous Spider-Man titles didn’t have that, it’d be interesting to see how Insomniac manages to incorporate the feature into the game, if at all.

Marvel’s Wolverine comes out in two different editions–the Standard version of the game will cost you $69.99 while the Digital Deluxe version sports a price tag of $79.99. There’s no mention of a collector’s edition that’s geared towards enthusiasts so if you were hoping for physical collectibles like statues and maybe action figures, looks like there won’t be any of that.

The way Insomniac took Spider-Man and pretty much reinvented him up to the towering standards of current-gen AAA gaming, from both technical and mechanical standpoints, it sure looks like they have done the same with Wolverine as well, which is slashing it’s way into the Playstation 5 on September 15 this year.
