Developer CD Projekt Red has confirmed that the upcoming Songs of the Past DLC for their seminal open world RPG The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt will be officially revealed at gamescom 2026 (which will run from 26 August to 30th August) during Opening Night Live. It means we may see either a story trailer of sorts or better yet, a new gameplay footage showcasing the new DLC which will have players take “the role of legendary monster slayer Geralt of Rivia for a brand new adventure”.
Set to be released in 2027, the surprise third DLC also comes out a total of 11 years after the second piece of expansion for The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt named Blood and Wine, which had arrived back in 2016. While the first expansion of Witcher 3, titled Hearts of Stone, was released in October 2015, the same year the game came out. The new DLC is being developed in collaboration with Fool’s Theory, a studio made of several “industry veterans” who had worked on The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, and will arrive on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC.
The upcoming new DLC has also resulted in a marked increase in the minimum system requirements of The Witcher 3, so check those out if you want to make sure it runs well on your system.
As we already know by now, the next mainline entry in the series is The Witcher 4 which features Ciri as a new monster hunter, a sharp departure from the past three titles where it was Geralt who was the main protagonist. It’s likely that the upcoming expansion is a way for the devs to bridge the narrative gap between The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt and Witcher 4, focusing on Ciri’s journey to become a full fledged monster hunter from being more of a side character in Witcher 3.
In other news of the venerable RPG series, it’s been confirmed that The Witcher 4 will be part of a whole new trilogy that will be released in a span of 6 years.
