One of the most crucial elements of all gaming systems–be it gaming PCs or consoles, is their cooling system which can literally make or break the system in more ways than one, in the long term. However, one of the biggest issues in the PS5 has been overheating which, although hasn’t affected all models of the console, but there indeed have been tons of cases of PS5s getting past their temperature thresholds, severely affecting the longevity of those consoles.
But thankfully, even though the overall specs of the PS6 is still up in the air, according to a recently leaked patent (as discovered by Tech4Gamers), the next-gen version of Playstation is set to have a significantly improved ‘cooling capacity’ over it’s predecessor which would be great. Here’s a brief description of the new patent from Sony:
‘An electronic device is provided that can improve cooling capacity of a heating element built into an electronic device disposed in a plurality of postures. A heat pipe (50) includes a heat dissipation portion (51) connected to a heat sink (61, 62) and an outer surface (53) in contact with a heat transfer member (70), and includes a pipe lower portion (52) positioned below the heat transfer member (51) and extending in a direction intersecting the vertical direction when a device body (11) is in a vertical posture. The pipe lower portion (52) includes an extension portion (55) extending outside an outer edge of the heat transfer member (70).’
As videogames get even more technologically advanced and complex, it all results in exponentially more overhead for the hardware components inside the consoles and it’s only natural for them to get heated too much and too quickly. Hence more sophisticated and efficient cooling systems are simply an essential for all consoles and gaming systems in the current era and beyond, even for the handhelds.
