Pokemon Legends: Z-A is set to drastically overhaul its Ranked Battles format on July 15 with the launch of Season 14, introducing a highly restrictive ruleset inspired by a forgotten Generation 6 mechanic. Dubbed “Sky Battles,” the upcoming season restricts eligible rosters to a tiny fraction of the game’s overall Pokedex, forcing competitive players to entirely re-evaluate their team compositions and strategy. The shift marks one of the most aggressive meta resets since the game’s launch, eclipsing the Mega Evolution-only restrictions seen earlier this year in Season 8.
The definitive constraint of Season 14 is its reliance on Flying-type Pokemon, drawing directly from the optional Sky Battles first introduced in Pokemon X and Y. However, the modern iteration features a much tighter filter; notable airborne creatures such as Vivillon, Latios, and Latias have been entirely omitted from the legal list. Because Pokemon Legends: Z-A has completely removed abilities from its gameplay loop, the historic inclusion of various Levitate users has been scrapped, leaving Fan Rotom as the sole eligible variant of its species to make the cut alongside traditional Flying types.
Out of the small pool of fully evolved eligible creatures, a few clear frontrunners are expected to dominate the competitive ladder. Mega Rayquaza stands out as the premier powerhouse of the season, retaining its unique ability to Mega Evolve via the move Dragon Ascent without sacrificing a held item slot. It will share the single allowed “restricted” team slot with Yveltal, though the latter may struggle to compete for popularity against Rayquaza’s offensive versatility. Meanwhile, Fan Rotom offers crucial defensive utility due to its natural resistance to Flying-type attacks, making it a mandatory consideration for counter-play strategies.
While the tactical shift offers a fresh challenge for veteran players, the season’s rewards have drawn immediate criticism from the community. Instead of the standard competitive payouts—which typically award high-value progression items like Gold Bottle Caps and Nuggets—Season 14 will exclusively award Pretty Feathers based on final placement. Reaching the prestigious Rank A yields 300 Pretty Feathers, a sum that converts to roughly 150,000 PokeDollars. While the flat cash value is decent, the loss of rare upgrade materials represents a noticeable downgrade that may discourage casual players from climbing the ranks before the season concludes on August 5.
