id Software has been severely gutted by Microsoft, the Xbox layoffs are still bringing terrible consequences to the video game industry, as we can see, things will get worse from here. Two thirds of the team behind DOOM 2016 are out, and while id Software has regained capacity similar to the 2016 revival era, some key heads of the team are missing. This is huge because it implies that the quality of what’s to come for DOOM might not be as good as the previous games we have received. There is a ton of reasons why this might end id Software, and personally I would be saddened to see this happen.
id Software might cease to be
This is a critical moment for the studio, as the following months will define what will happen with it in the first place. If they don’t rehire the people that they have cut down, I’m very sure that id Software, one of the most relevant studios in gaming by the way, will cease to be. Quality is important, and despite Doom The Dark Ages not meeting shareholder expectations it was a great game filled with love and tons of passion put behind.
I wanna see more games like The Dark Ages, but considering these cuts have happened we might never see something with that level of quality again which is a shame. There needs to be more protections for the people who work in the video game industry, as layoffs often threaten the stability of the workplace, being one of the most affected IT sectors. Thankfully, studios like Double Fine managed to go indie to avoid the worst scenario, but not everyone is fortunate to have the chance to escape in such a way. The only thing we can wait for is for Microsoft to suffer the consequences.
