Marathon is the newest dumpster fire by Bungie, and things look pretty desperate, it seems very weird that this game wasn’t launched as a free to play game in the first place and we can see its slowly dying. Its been a while since it came out and now they seem to be pushing for a free to play model for some days before the offer ends. It is clear that Bungie is desperate, trying to grab the attention of people to make them play a game that already failed. If it was such a success people would be talking about this one more, unfortunately it is not the case for Marathon.
Marathon goes desperate
Having a player base is important, and the peak of this game is pretty sad considering what game we are talking about here. The all time peak was 88.337 players in total, which is not the kind of numbers you wanna see in a live service game, if you aren’t in the half millions you are already a failure, not to mention the player drop-off this game experienced. I would be surprised if this game lasts until the end of the year, and it will probably be because whales will try keeping it alive by microtransactions.
For those not in the know, Marathon used to be a popular franchise with some amazing lore back in the 90s, the best era of gaming, and it played in a similar way to DOOM but with its own quirks and technicalities. There was a ton to discover, and the experience was clearly geared towards those who liked to explore maps. This new Marathon has basically nothing to do with all of this, and it pretty much shows that the Bungie of the past is totally different to the Bungie of today.
