Blizzard Entertainment announced at BlizzCon 2026 that Diablo 5 will feature a mobile Caravan system heavily inspired by the campsite mechanics found in traditional role-playing games like Baldur’s Gate 3 and Dragon Age. Set in a post-apocalyptic iteration of Sanctuary where the Lord of Terror has already claimed victory, the upcoming action-RPG removes traditional safe-haven cities and villages. In their place, players must rely on a customizable caravan instance that serves as a temporary haven, merchant hub, and narrative center away from the constant threat of demonic forces.
During a media panel following the opening ceremony, Narrative Director Jennifer Helper explained how her previous experience at BioWare helped shape this structural shift. The Caravan allows players to interact with NPC followers, forge equipment at a blacksmith, replenish supplies, and manage party preparation outside the active open world. Unlike traditional CRPGs, the followers in Diablo 5 will not feature deep skill trees or customizable clothing, but they will offer distinct personalities and story arcs that evolve alongside the player’s narrative progress.
The inclusion of the Caravan addresses both narrative necessity and gameplay pacing. Because Sanctuary’s settlements have been reduced to ruins, the developers needed a reliable mechanism for town-portal functionalities and vendor management that fits a world without permanent civilization. As players progress through the campaign, the mobile base expands from a modest encampment into a larger hub, reflecting the growing resistance against Diablo’s reign. This progression acts as a narrative checkpoint, anchoring player growth in a world defined by impermanence.
Scheduled for release in 2029, Diablo 5 aims to bridge the gap between fast-paced ARPG combat and modern RPG story structure. By introducing a central hub for interaction and respite, Blizzard hopes to give players a stronger connection to the world and its surviving inhabitants while preserving the core isometric loot grind that defines the franchise.
