Iron Banner Returns to Destiny 2 With New Armor Set Amid Studio Layoffs

Bungie is moving forward with a major rewards refresh for Destiny 2’s Iron Banner on June 30, introducing the highly anticipated Iron Battalion armor set despite severe internal turmoil at the studio. The update arrives on the heels of a sudden announcement earlier this month that the game had received its final major content update, a decision that ultimately culminated in the termination of hundreds of developer and contractor positions across both Bungie and Sony Interactive Entertainment.

The impending Iron Banner rotation marks a transition into a automated cycle for the multiplayer mode, which will now return every four weeks for a seven-day period. Players participating in the upcoming event will have access to a revamped loot pool featuring 12 reprised weapons, two returning weapons, and 11 tiered variants. However, the focal point for the remaining player base is the new Iron Battalion gear, which introduces distinct tier-based gameplay advantages tailored specifically for player-versus-environment (PvE) activities.

According to the update details, equipping pieces of the new set unlocks two substantial performance tiers. A two-piece investment grants “Primary Honing,” which noticeably improves the handling and reload speeds of primary weapon archetypes while scaling their damage against non-boss combatants based on internal weapon statistics. For players who commit to a four-piece set, the “Supercyclical” perk activates, allowing a portion of Super energy to be automatically refunded immediately after an active Super ability expires, provided the player secured final blows during its duration.

While the automated calendar ensures that activities like Iron Banner and the Trials of Osiris continue to rotate, the broader state of the game remains incredibly fragile. The sweeping staff reductions—which reportedly totaled roughly 292 studio cuts and upwards of 400 total positions across SIE—have already taken a toll on the game’s maintenance, leading to immediate delays for a planned June 30 hotfix meant to address ongoing bugs and quality-of-life adjustments. With Studio Head Justin Truman having also stepped down during the restructuring, the community faces a landscape where new rewards are still arriving, but the structural support behind them has been fundamentally diminished.
