The upcoming Star Wars Galactic Racer presents a new flavor of open world racing experience that’s starkly different from anything we’ve seen in the racing genre in the current era of gaming but beyond that, the devs have said that they want to bring a transformative change to racing games as we know it which sounds extremely ambitious.
Developer Fuse Games, which consist of many developers who were also part of the team that made the genre-redefining Burnout Paradise, which had brought a lot of fun layers into the traditional racing game experience, are optimistic about their new sci-fi racer to add an element that’s been missing from most arcade racers we see now and that is: consequence. And in a recent interview with Eurogamer, Fuse Games founder Matt Webster and creative director Kieran Crimmins, who was also part of Criterion which is the same studio behind Burnout Paradise, explained their grand ambitions with Star Wars Galactic Racer.
“Consequence is missing. It’s tough to have consequences when you’ve got a rewind button, right? So, consequences are missing. How do we bring consequence into the structure? How do we have not just the consequence of crashing, but consequence in decision making? Take your build. What are you trying to do here?
“So we want to move the genre forward, and so there are similarities with Paradise in that regard, in terms of how we are trying to just invent new cool stuff, that’s what we’re trying to do here. It just happens to be inside a Star Wars racing game.”
Crimmins explained: “It’s why we’ve got the amount of vehicles that we’ve got from the Star Wars universe, like having four vehicles larger than just cars, because we know that we need to take a leap forward to really be a transformative game in the industry. I really think that Star Wars: Galactic Racer has the potential to be that.”
Star Wars Galactic Racer is zooming your way on October 6, 2026 for Playstation 5, Xbox Series X|S and PC with pre-orders live now.
