Halo Studios has officially pulled back the curtain on Halo: Campaign Evolved, confirming a July 28, 2026, release date for the Xbox Series X and PlayStation 5. Revealed during the Xbox Games Showcase 2026, the upcoming Unreal Engine 5 remake of the 2001 classic Halo: Combat Evolved will feature a brand-new three-mission prequel campaign titled Operation: Meteorite, expanding heavily on the backstory of Master Chief and Sergeant Avery Johnson.
The newly announced prequel chapters take place one year before the events on Installation 04, centering on a high-stakes assault against a Covenant research vessel. Sergeant Johnson is set to occupy a central role in the narrative, a move that looks to flesh out his partnership with Master Chief prior to their arrival on the ringworld. The missions will introduce a variety of legacy weapons from across the broader franchise alongside entirely new threats, including a heavily armored Brute variant specifically designed to challenge players on Legendary difficulty.
A newly released two-and-a-half-minute trailer highlights the structural variety of the new content, showcasing traditional ground combat, a space-faring sequence where the protagonists pilot a Covenant Phantom variant, and a signature Warthog escape sequence. Beyond the narrative expansions, the remake introduces modernized mechanical changes to the original gameplay loop, most notably the addition of a sprint mechanic. Pre-orders have officially gone live across all major digital storefronts, with the title positioned at a $49.99 USD price point.
This remake represents the first major project from Halo Studios since moving away from its proprietary Slipspace Engine in favor of Epic Games’ Unreal Engine 5. The inclusion of new story content and modernized movement mechanics has already sparked dialogue within the community regarding how faithful a remake should remain to its source material. Industry insiders suggest that similar remakes for Halo 2 and Halo 3 are currently in development, indicating that Campaign Evolved will serve as the template for the future of the franchise.
