The upcoming Control Resonant, which is currently set for a September 24 release, will determine the future of the Control series of games which started back in 2019, according to developer Remedy Entertainment. The studio already has plans for more games in the Control universe, although a lot of that depends on how the upcoming entry does, financially of course.
In a recent interview with Insider Gaming, Control Resonant’s Art Director Elmeri Raitanen, said that the Control series was always envisioned as a sprawling, overarching narrative comprised of multiple titles and there was ‘always the plan, from the get-go’ to eventually move on from Jesse, who was the protagonist of the first game, to Dylan who you’ll play as in Control Resonant.
Raitanen also stated that unlike Max Payne or Alan Wake, the Control series of games are based on a ‘world first design’ and are not named after particular protagonists and instead, the central narrative and world building take precedence over any of the characters.
He also says that the fate of any future Control title greatly depend on the upcoming game, in more ways than one:
“let’s hope that we do well so we can do even more stories in the Control universe.”
Lifetime sales of Control hit over 6 million units in may this year and with an even stronger marketing, as revealed by Remedy’s communications director in an IGN Interview, Control Resonant could see an even bigger success.
“We are giving Control Resonant, by far Remedy’s biggest marketing campaign, to support the game. It is very competitively priced, and much more is coming in the days ahead now that we have announced our release date.”
Remedy is currently one of the most eccentric studios in the industry who consistently put out exceptional games with phenomenal production values and innovative gameplay mechanics along with fresh narrative ideas but hasn’t been able to land a massive hit like it truly deserves. But hopefully, this year’s Control Resonant will turn out to be the game that finally manages to bring the kind of commercial success that many players know the studio deserves.
