Cliff Bleszinski Weighs In on Gears of War: E-Day Gameplay

Former Epic Games design director Cliff Bleszinski has shared his thoughts on the newly unveiled Gears of War: E-Day, offering a mix of praise and constructive critique regarding the upcoming prequel’s combat mechanics. Speaking via social media following the game’s presentation at the Xbox Games Showcase, the franchise’s original lead designer questioned how easily the iconic Locust Horde enemies appeared to fall in battle during the initial footage.

Bleszinski noted that the Locust Drones seen in the demonstration seemed to go down too quickly, contrasting the footage with the feedback loop of the original 2006 title. Recalling an early reaction from Gearbox founder Randy Pitchford, who famously labeled the original game a “grinder,” Bleszinski argued that the franchise’s central antagonists should retain their trademark thick skin and heavy armor. He emphasized that the underlying gameplay loop should explicitly reflect the physical resilience of the subterranean threat.

Despite his reservations about enemy durability, the veteran designer expressed overall optimism for the project being handled by The Coalition. Bleszinski commended the studio’s technical strides and the feature set showcased in the trailer, stating that the project noticeably exhibits the “heart” required for a proper entry in the series. His public commentary marks a relatively rare moment of an original creator evaluating the evolution of a major intellectual property they are no longer associated with.

The upcoming shooter is currently scheduled for an official launch on October 6, 2026, and will debut as an Xbox console exclusive alongside a PC release on Steam. Developed on Unreal Engine 5, the prequel aims to take the series back to its survival-horror roots by focusing heavily on the immediate, terrifying aftermath of Emergence Day in the city of Kalona. Early testers and players who secure pre-orders will gain access to a beta phase starting on August 6, 2026.
