Ubisoft is taking the marketing for its upcoming Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced to an unprecedented scale, announcing a real-life treasure hunt with a prize pool valued at $500,000. In a partnership with French startup Unsolved Hunts, the publisher has confirmed that an actual chest of pirate spoils has been buried somewhere in the Caribbean, waiting for a player to solve a series of complex, real-world riddles to claim it.
The bounty, dubbed “The Lost Treasure of Edward Kenway,” is a physical hoard consisting of specially minted gold coins and a high-value centerpiece: a rock crystal skull adorned with a red opal, valued at $150,000. This “Gold & Crystal” hunt is not a simple digital tie-in; it requires participants to decipher fifteen elaborate puzzles delivered through physical and digital documents, including a cryptic message in a bottle and a detailed map of the Caribbean.
While the treasure is physically buried, Ubisoft clarified that the puzzles are designed to be solved remotely from anywhere in the world. The first individual to correctly identify the “X” on the map will be flown to the Gulf of Mexico to unearth the chest. However, potential hunters should be prepared for a long haul; the organizers estimate the hunt could take anywhere from two to five years to conclude. Access to the hunt is not included with the game itself and requires a separate purchase, with entry fees starting around $40.
The promotion arrives as excitement builds for Black Flag Resynced, which is scheduled for release on July 9, 2026. This remake of the 2013 classic is being handled primarily by Ubisoft Singapore and promises a ground-up overhaul of the original experience. Beyond the visual upgrades provided by the latest Anvil Engine, the remake introduces new naval mechanics, expanded parkour options, and additional narrative scenes written by the original game’s lead scriptwriter, Darby McDevitt.
By tying the game’s launch to a multi-year, high-stakes ARG, Ubisoft is leaning heavily into the “Golden Age of Piracy” fantasy that made the original a fan favorite. While the treasure hunt officially begins on November 9, pre-orders for the hunt materials are already live, offering a head start to those willing to trade their digital cutlasses for a real-world shovel.
