Playstation Plus which is the monthly subscription service for both PS4 and PS5 from Sony, offering access to online multiplayer, monthly downloadable games, and exclusive store discounts, will now see an increase in price in select regions cause of “ongoing market conditions.” The company has stated the following in their official Twitter/X account:
“Starting May 20, PlayStation Plus prices for new customers will increase in select regions. Due to ongoing market conditions, prices will start at $10.99 USD / €9.99 EUR / £7.99 GBP for 1-month subscriptions and $27.99 USD / €27.99 EUR / £21.99 GBP for 3-month subscriptions. This price change does not apply to current subscribers (except in Turkey and India) unless the existing subscription changes or lapses.”
In a nutshell, the monthly subscription cost has increased by $1 and the three-month subscription fee increased by $3 which seems pretty marginal, especially considering the huge upsurge in price across the video game industry right now. In fact, Sony raised the price for the Playstation 5 back in March because of “continued pressures in the global economic landscape” which started mainly due to the AI data centers hoarding RAM chips that skyrocketed hardware costs all over the industry.
Sony’s playerbase has responded negatively to the price increase as the company had already hiked the cost of the Playstation 5 consoles (including PS5 Pro) and now they’re choosing to charge more for their online subscription service which seems a bit unfair, at least in the current state of the industry.
In other news of the Sony platform, it’s also been claimed recently that Playstation is looking to bring back several of their older IPs into the current gen as reliable leaker NateTheHate has posted on Twitter/X recently: “There is truth to Sony exploring & considering reviving some of their older, unused IPs.” And while it’s not known which IPs will be resurrected for the Playstation, many players have already started listing their preferences which include Sly Cooper, InFamous, Ape Escape, Jak and Daxter, which are all decade old IPs that haven’t received a new entry in many years.
