Square Enix premiered a new trailer for Final Fantasy Resonance during the September 3 State of Play broadcast, officially confirming that Final Fantasy 7 antagonist Sephiroth will appear as both a boss encounter and a summonable Vision. The upcoming HD-2D title from the developers of Octopath Traveler is set to launch on October 22, 2026, across PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, Nintendo Switch, and Nintendo Switch 2.
The new trailer featured the iconic One-Winged Angel making a dramatic, flame-engulfed entrance reimagined in the game’s retro-style pixel art aesthetic. While exact mechanics regarding his boss battle and Vision abilities remain undisclosed, Square Enix confirmed that defeating Sephiroth will unlock exclusive rewards. His inclusion adds to a crossover roster that already features core series protagonists like Cloud Strife, Noctis Lucis Caelum, and Clive Rosfield.
Alongside the character reveal, Square Enix launched a free playable demo available immediately on all target platforms. Weighing in at approximately 5.4 GB, the demo allows players to experience the entirety of the game’s first chapter, with save data carrying directly into the full release next month.
The news comes during a busy period for the franchise, serving as a nostalgic precursor to next year’s Final Fantasy 7 Revelation and the upcoming expansion for Final Fantasy 14.
