Overwatch Franchise Names Justin Richmond as New Creative Director

Blizzard Entertainment has appointed Justin Richmond as the new creative director for the Overwatch franchise, a move that has immediately reignited long-standing community hopes for a full-fledged animated series. The veteran developer brings a portfolio that spans both high-profile video game development and successful television production, making him a unique fit for a franchise that has historically relied heavily on multimedia storytelling to build its lore.

Richmond’s career in the interactive entertainment industry began in 2002 at Backbone Entertainment, where he worked as an artist on titles such as MechAssault: Phantom War. He later joined Naughty Dog, contributing to Uncharted 2: Among Thieves before stepping into the role of co-director for Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception. Most recently, Richmond spent a decade at the multimedia studio Wonderstorm, where he co-created the acclaimed Netflix animated series The Dragon Prince, establishing the exact television credentials fans believe could benefit Overwatch.

The timing of the appointment coincides with a major milestone for the hero shooter. May 2026 marked the tenth anniversary of the Overwatch franchise, a celebration Blizzard commemorated with an in-game event featuring legacy skins, classic cosmetic items, and a surprise crossover with Fortnite. The battle royale collaboration introduced iconic characters like Tracer and Mercy into Epic Games’ ecosystem, alongside specific weapons like the Pulse Pistols, underscoring the enduring mainstream appeal of the game’s character roster.

Richmond has already established his connection to the community, noting that his history with the game dates back to its original reveal at BlizzCon 2014, where he repeatedly queued up to play the initial demo. With Richmond confirmed to attend BlizzCon 2026 this September, the player base is looking toward the convention for official updates regarding both the competitive shooter and potential expansions into traditional media.
