Blizzard Entertainment has distributed a new internal survey featuring 39 distinct skin concepts, offering a rare glimpse into the potential creative direction for Overwatch in 2027 and beyond. The collection, which was recently documented on Reddit, showcases 10 unique thematic sets ranging from “Battle Sharks” and “Animal Gangsters” to “Hell Bikers.” While these illustrations do not serve as a definitive roadmap for upcoming content, they historically indicate which aesthetics the development team is currently prioritizing for future seasonal updates.
The hero distribution within this latest batch of concepts is notably diverse, featuring 26 of the game’s 51 characters. While franchise staples like Kiriko and Juno receive multiple designs, the survey places a surprising emphasis on newer and less-represented heroes. Characters such as Brigitte, Hazard, and Mauga are featured prominently, while Mercy—traditionally the recipient of the most frequent cosmetic updates—is entirely absent from this specific set. This shift suggests a concentrated effort to bolster the wardrobes of the roster’s more recent additions.
Perhaps most intriguing for lore enthusiasts is the inclusion of several names linked to the “Reign of Talon” narrative arc. The concepts feature designs for Emre, Mizuki, Anran, Domina, and Jetpack Cat—a character long-relegated to community memes and background Easter eggs. By including these names in a formal survey, Blizzard appears to be testing the waters for how these figures might eventually integrate into the game’s evolving 5v5 and 6v6 environments. The “Retro Space” theme, in particular, showcases a Jetpack Cat design that has already gained significant traction among the player base.
Despite the excitement surrounding these visuals, players should expect a significant lead time before any of these designs reach the live servers. Past data indicates that survey concepts typically take at least twelve months to transition from 2D art to in-game models. With the current development cycle, these skins likely won’t debut until Season 2 or 3 of 2027. For now, they serve as a barometer for the community’s tastes, helping Blizzard decide which of these high-concept designs warrant the resources required for full production.
