Embark Studios is currently experimenting with increased team sizes for ARC Raiders, signaling a potential shift in how the extraction shooter handles its core cooperative loops. Executive Producer Aleksander Grøndal recently confirmed that the development team is testing groups larger than the standard three-player squad to introduce fresh tactical hurdles. While Grøndal clarified that these tests do not yet constitute an official commitment, the move suggests a desire to break away from the rigid matchmaking structures typically found in the genre to see how the sandbox reacts to larger player concentrations.
This exploration into group dynamics coincides with a significant pivot in the game’s post-launch roadmap. After maintaining a monthly update cadence since its August 2025 release, Embark is transitioning to a “two major releases per year” model. The studio noted that the previous monthly cycle was unsustainable for the scope of content they aim to deliver. By moving to biannual updates, the developers intend to produce much larger expansions—similar to October’s “Frozen Trail”—while a smaller live team handles routine patches, seasonal events, and the upcoming endgame Trader vendor.
The prospect of larger squads has sparked immediate speculation regarding the return of more robust PvE elements. ARC Raiders famously began its life as a purely cooperative PvE title before pivoting to a PvPvE extraction format. If the studio implements four or five-player teams, it could pave the way for dedicated raid-style content or massive world bosses that require more firepower than a trio can provide. Grøndal emphasized that the game thrives as a sandbox, and any changes to team capacity would be designed to invite players to strategize differently within that open environment.
Despite the shift in update frequency, ARC Raiders remains a significant commercial success, recently surpassing 24 million copies sold. To sustain this momentum globally, Embark is also implementing a regional pricing initiative to make the game more accessible in various markets. As the title approaches its one-year anniversary, these structural changes to team sizes and content delivery schedules will likely define whether it can maintain its position as a heavyweight in the increasingly crowded extraction market.
