Private WoW Server, Turtle WoW, is being taken down due to it being illegal, at least according to the affected party Blizzard Entertainment. Considering what has been going on between the two, I would argue that both have solid arguments on what’s happening, and the fact that Blizzard won in the end felt like the most expected outcome. A private WoW server can prove to be an issue to the official game, considering its still up and running, and one that adds custom content into the mix is a clear competitor too, an illicit one at that.
Private WoW Servers might not last
The fury of Blizzard seems to keep raging on, and it might not be stopping anytime soon, I feel like they did the right thing considering Turtle WoW actually circumvented many clauses Blizzard has, many red lines that must not be crossed. However, Blizzard is not innocent at all, as they have been trying to profit off the hard work of the community and even tried to take the rights away of those who made mods for their other games. It is crazy that a company should even attempt to do this, but they don’t want us remembering this.
The fact that the Warcraft 3 Remake came with such clauses like giving away our mods to them without any compensation is genuinely insane, and they have been rightfully roasted for doing so. However, Turtle WoW actually infringed on copyright and also made money on the side with this project, if they hadn’t done such a thing I can see the project would have kept on living indefinitely. Nobody is a true victim here as both parties are known for their overall shadiness, however, to the eyes of the people out of the loop it might seem like a titan has abused a small private WoW server.
