Pre-orders for Elden Ring: Tarnished Edition have surfaced on Amazon, confirming that FromSoftware’s open-world epic is headed to the Nintendo Switch 2 with a premium $79.99 price point. While the expansion into Nintendo’s ecosystem is a major milestone for the “Soulsborne” genre, the listing reveals two significant caveats that are already sparking debate among the community: a higher-than-average MSRP and the use of “Game-Key Cards” rather than traditional cartridges.
The $80 price tag, while steep for a game originally released in 2022, is largely attributed to the inclusion of the Shadow of the Erdtree expansion. This bundled approach mirrors the “Premium” or “Complete” editions found on other platforms, where the base game and DLC combined carry a similar cost. However, the optics remain challenging for Nintendo fans, especially when compared to other high-profile Switch 2 ports like Star Wars Outlaws or Assassin’s Creed Shadows, both of which are currently listed at the standard $59.99.
Perhaps more controversial is the confirmation that the physical release utilizes a Game-Key Card system. This means the retail box will contain a physical card that acts as a license, but the card itself holds no actual game data. Players will be required to download the entirety of Elden Ring and its expansion via the internet. While this allows for easier reselling compared to a purely digital purchase, it removes the “plug-and-play” convenience and long-term preservation benefits usually associated with physical media.
As it stands, FromSoftware and publisher Bandai Namco have not settled on a firm launch window, with the current December 31, 2026, date on Amazon serving as a temporary placeholder. Despite the logistical hurdles of the download requirements and the high cost of entry, the prospect of playing a 95-rated masterpiece on a handheld remains a massive draw for the Switch 2’s early lineup. Whether the “Tarnished Edition” justifies its premium positioning will likely depend on how well the new hardware handles the Lands Between.
