Square Enix Signals the Return of Nier with New Franchise Teaser

Square Enix has officially broken its silence on the future of the Nier franchise, releasing a celebration video that strongly suggests a direct sequel to the 2017 hit Nier: Automata is finally in development. The teaser, which arrived amidst a series of anniversary milestones for the series, marks the most definitive sign yet that the publisher is ready to move beyond the remasters and mobile spin-offs that have occupied the brand for the last several years.

The original Nier: Automata, developed by PlatinumGames, was a transformative moment for both director Yoko Taro and Square Enix. While the 2010 Nier was a cult classic born from the Drakengard universe, it was Automata that propelled the series into the mainstream, selling millions of copies and garnering critical acclaim for its philosophical narrative and high-octane combat. This new teaser leans heavily into that legacy, suggesting that the next entry will maintain the radical gameplay shifts and existential themes that fans have come to expect.

For long-term followers of the series, the prospect of a new mainline entry carries significant weight. Nier has always been defined by its willingness to subvert player expectations, often featuring stories set thousands of years apart with thin narrative threads connecting them. By positioning this new project as a look at the “future of the franchise,” Square Enix appears to be doubling down on the creative risks that made the previous games successful, rather than simply retreading the path of 2B and 9S.

While specific plot details and platform availability remain under wraps, the timing of the announcement indicates that production is likely well underway. The industry has been speculating on a sequel since the “Ver.1.22” update of the original game proved there was still a massive appetite for this universe. As Square Enix prepares for its next fiscal cycle, this Nier project stands as a cornerstone of their upcoming lineup, promising a return to the bleak, beautiful, and mechanical world that redefined the action-RPG genre nearly a decade ago.
