Final Fantasy 7 is out on GOG, but this version seems to be somehow worse than an already terrible port to PC back in 2013. Final Fantasy 7 is a classic that everyone should play, grabbing a PS1 emulator might be the better choice to play it because every attempt to port this game has been shoddy at best. Square Enix has also AI upscaled all of the pre-rendered backgrounds, making them look terrible while the PS1 version will still remain as sharp and magical as ever. People expected that 2026, 13 years after the release of the original port, they would have learnt their lesson.
Final Fantasy 7’s port is bad
Nobody expected things could get worse, battles are running even quicker which causes a ton of issues with animation and audio desynching, the fact that this even went through some quality check means that Square Enix finally implemented “AI” to replace human workers from that position. What we get by using these things is just worse products that look like an insult to the original, even making a piece of tech from the 90s look like something superior by comparison. This is the reality of modern Square for you, a company so close to collapse in the past that is doing the same mistakes.
They believe they are too big to fail, and as long as they can keep capitalizing on endlessly milking Final Fantasy 7 the more respect I lose for them as a company. They have already stated many years ago during the NFT craze that games being fun is an outdated concept, and it feels like that is the way they wanna roll with this. They have become the Shinra they told us we must oppose and destroy, hopefully a resistance can unite to reclaim the true version of Final Fantasy 7 by ourselves.
