For years and years, one of the biggest complaints about Activision’s juggernaut Call of Duty franchise has been that it often prefers iteration over innovation, and perhaps that’s one of the reasons why next year’s Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4’s multiplayer was rumored to be ‘a complete copy of Modern Warfare 2’ which came out in 2022, even the ‘excessive visual recoil’ gunplay was reported to remain unchanged.
However, developer Infinity Ward has recently commented on the leak and suggested that the rumors are simply not true, which should ease the minds of many fans of the FPS franchise.
TheGhostofHope, who has been a reliable Call of Duty leaker, had recently posted on social media that 2026’s Modern Warfare 4’s multiplayer is going to be pretty much identical to that of 2022’s Modern Warfare 2 “except for no perk charging system and less ADS/slide penalties”. He also went ahead and revealed the following:
“There is A TON of visual recoil on weapons in Modern Warfare 4 just like Modern Warfare II. Like I said in my last tweet it’s pretty much a complete copy outside of a few little things.”
And now, Infinity Ward has commented on social media regarding the above claims about next year’s Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4, saying:
“Happy holidays everybody! Wishing our community an awesome holiday season and looking forward to talking soon. Don’t believe everything you read on the Internet. See you in 2026.”
While the developer’s words were kind of vague regarding the multiplayer of the next Call of Duty, they did somewhat suggest that it won’t be quite like 2022’s title. Of course, the possibility of 2026’s Call of Duty being largely identical to one of it’s previous entries is not a good look for the franchise and really hits home that the series needs to undergo some serious changes on a fundamental level.
Interestingly, TheGhostofHope has responded to Infinity Ward’s message while stating that there’s no incentive for him to provide unverified info on a Call of Duty title and risking his overall reputation as a trusted leaker which he has built over the years:
“The fact that a billion dollar studio has gone out of its way to *generically* deny 2 of my most recent leaks when they’ve never done it before nor towards others is frankly very weird and should raise some red flags about why they’d do such a thing when they never did it before. I have largely kept the same sources for years and my MW4 leak is no different to that. I would never sink my reputation with COD leaking that I’ve built over the years on faulty unverified info.”
His words do make a lot of sense but right now it’s probably best to wait for more official news on Modern Warfare 4 that will come out in the near future.
