Marvel Rivals Dev Announces Plans for PVE Mode

NetEase Games, the developers of Marvel Rivals, however, stated that there is no near-future plan for a PvE mode exclusive, following high-demand audience request. Launched towards the tail end of 2024, the hero shooter has rapidly accumulated a huge number of players in a relatively short time, with tens of millions that play its player-versus-player mode with such iconic Marvel super heroes.

Since its launch, there have been demands from fans for a PvE experience and the necessity of a mode in which players would fight AI-controlled opponents instead of other players. Producer Weicong Wu voiced these demands in an earlier interview with IGN, explaining that a “hardcore PvE” mode would be opposite of what Marvel Rivals is meant to be. Although he did admit the demand, he also explained that a PvE addition of full scale is not in the works.

This function exists within the broader trend of the hero shooter category. Even Overwatch 2, which initially contemplated a PvE campaign, was forced to temper its ambitions thanks to development struggles. Producing a coherent PvE experience means having a different game design mind, one which might not fit with NetEase’s current vision for Marvel Rivals.

Despite that, Wu wouldn’t completely exclude PvE elements from entering the game in some form. He was coy on that aspect, saying that the team is “experimenting” with new ideas and leaving an option open on a “lighter mode” that could build a PvE-like experience without saying more. That is at least a suggestion that the team is exploring how to introduce PvE concepts without altering the game’s focus on competitive multiplayer action.

For the time being, Marvel Rivals is all PvP, and there isn’t really a PvE mode planned. NetEase does appear to be attuned to the demand, however, and if the game continues to expand, future updates could bring new modes that appeal to players who want to experience the action in a different manner.
