Dawnfolk is a new strategy indie game that has appeared on PC today. It combines roguelite mechanics with city building and it looks quite neat. However, one can’t help to feel that it seems that the roguelite genre is getting over exploited in indie titles. Darenn Keller is a solo developer who created this experience for players to enjoy. The market might be over saturated with these titles, but it is important to do what one enjoys. We at Infinite Start will cover this new development after the break.
New Townfolks
Darenn Keller as participated in multiple game jams. Game jams are interesting opportunities for new developers to try and get their games out for people to play. Usually, these are done in a tournament format, and the winner gets a big publicity boost. It seems that Dawnfolk is one of the titles that won the LowRezJam, a game jam centered around the concept of low resolution games.
Game jams are often amazing experiences to see emerging titles and new ideas, but one can make a critique about variety in them. It feels as if the titles that always win tend to be roguelite centered, and its starting to feel very samey. While we shouldn’t put in doubt the passion behind creating this titles, and accept them for what they are, maybe we need more eyes on other genres.
Regardless, in Dawnfolk, you will explore an uncharted medieval fantasy world, manage resources, build cities, and survive against many dangers. Minigames add a unique challenge to supporting your people. The better you are at the minigames, the more resources you get and the more likely your community will weather the darkness. Every choice matters as you explore different strategies and play styles in the game. The addition of minigames feels rather innovative, but we wonder if they will make a difference in the sea of titles.
