Rance 01 + 02 has been announced on Steam, which is quite unexpected because the platform tends to do some severe moderation when it comes to games that they themselves don’t like even if they are allowed. A ton of Japanese games have been targeted due to containing NSFW content, and it seems that only those are the ones they aim against. Now the American “AI” slop porn? Seems like that gets scotch free without any sort of issues, which is quite sickening and hypocritical in a way, I hope Valve someday fixes this sort of thing as injustices must not continue to exist on the platform.
Rance is back
It is safe to say that this version of the game will be censored and completely reworked in a way that all of the jokes and mentions of many sexual acts are removed, perhaps it might be an entire rewrite. The PC-98 version can still be accessed with an emulator if you really wanna know all of the things that have been removed and outright censored. While some may say that censorship is the right way, this can be a slippery slope to censor other types of media such as horror games or anything that shows some sort of violence or ideology.
Rance is surprising to see, especially amidst the current landscape of censorship and silencing of creative voices, we can only hope that the people behind it decide to go hard and not suffer from the chilling effect of censorship. We need more creatives that are brave and decide to do bold things in the industry, because things are getting a bit old and repetitive with some releases. While this is just a remake of the old game, perhaps we will get a piece of art treated as it deserves, with almost no censorship, Rance has been with us for decades now.
