A New Game Boy Color Release Has Been Confirmed for 2026

The Game Boy Color is receiving an official, cartridge-based video game release in the fourth quarter of 2026, nearly three decades after Nintendo launched the legendary handheld hardware. Developed by playinstinct and published by ModRetro, Buddy: The Video Game will serve as an official movie tie-in based on the upcoming feature film Buddy, which hits theaters on August 28. While engineered to launch on ModRetro’s modern Chromatic handheld, the physical cartridges will remain entirely backward-compatible with original Game Boy Color systems.

The underlying premise presents a surreal twist on standard media adaptations. Based on director Casper Kelly’s fictional children’s television show It’s Buddy! It’s Buddy!, the story revolves around a brightly colored unicorn whose cheerful educational routines collapse when a young child refuses to participate. The video game adaptation translates this concept into a blend of survival horror mechanics, visual novel decision-making, and cheerful minigames that directly mirror the fictional show’s broadcast segments.

Players can navigate three primary gameplay setups within the main campaign framework. Story Mode tasks players with making critical choices while surviving Buddy’s wrath, whereas Survival Mode strips away narrative elements to deliver pure, location-based hide-and-seek gameplay. In a reverse scenario, Buddy Mode allows players to take direct control of the antagonist to track down fleeing children. Meanwhile, a dedicated Mini Game Mode provides lighthearted challenges including dancing, painting, and batting practice for high-score chasers.

While modern homebrew developments regularly target legacy platforms, commercial movie adaptations on vintage media formats remain exceedingly rare in today’s marketplace. The arrival of devices like the ModRetro Chromatic has renewed physical manufacturing pipelines for retro platforms, demonstrating that historical hardware continues to attract active development decades after original commercial production ceased.
