Bungie Denies Rumors of Marathon and Destiny Merge, Confirms both December and March 2027 Updates for Marathon to Release for Free

A recent rumor had been making the rounds on the internet stating developer Bungie is planning to merge both of it’s Marathon and Destiny IPs, and drastically alter the future of both franchises. However, the devs have officially responded and said that the merging rumors are objectively untrue, which means if you’re currently enjoying either Marathon or Destiny, rest assured as your gameplay experiences will remain unaffected in every way:

“As someone who’s worked on both Destiny and Marathon, I can confirm that the “leak” about us merging the two IPs is fake,” Marathon creative director Julia Nardin said in a recent post on Twitter/X. “They share a lot of the same Bungie DNA, but like siblings they’re also their own independent entities. Please don’t believe everything you read online.”

And in a follow up post on their social media page, Bungie has also confirmed that both December and March updates for Marathon are going to be free, and not paid DLC.

“If you own Marathon, the December and March updates will be available at no additional cost. That includes gameplay content such as new zones, weapons, and Runners.”

While it’s normal for developers to charge for huge updates, in this case it seems Bungie’s trying to win back many of the players for their new hardcore extraction shooter Marathon which didn’t quite make the splash the developers had originally hoped for. But even though the game clearly missed it’s mark, Bungie had confirmed back in April that Marathon won’t be facing any imminent shutdowns which happened to titles like Highguard and Concord.

Also, it’s genuinely admirable for the devs to go ahead with their game and enrich the overall experience via updates with numerous adjustments and improvements, which respects the current player base of Marathon (even though it’s not nearly as big as many would’ve liked to) as well as the spirit of the game.
