It seems for the first time in a really long time, a game in the phenomenally successful Call of Duty franchise is having a bit of a struggle in terms of actual sales which is quite shocking in more ways than one. According to a new report from The Game Business, the overall sales numbers of Call of Duty: Black Ops 7, including both digital and physical editions, are actually down by 63% compared to it’s rival Battlefield 6.
And when compared to last year’s Black Ops 6, the total sales of this year’s Call of Duty: Black Ops 7 have decreased by a substantial 50% which is pretty significant by all accounts.
But when compared to Battlefield 6, it’s important to remember as Black Ops 7 is available on Xbox Game Pass so even if the sales numbers of the former is higher, the overall player count of the latter may actually still be higher. Though when compared to last year’s Black Ops 6, it’s clear that the sales numbers of the most recent Call of Duty title has indeed fallen by a significant margin.
However, despite the decreased overall sales numbers, Call of Duty: Black Ops 7 was still the highest selling title in terms of total revenue and sales in the region of Europe for the week ending November 16 which is it’s launch week. And during the same week, EA’s Battlefield 6 came in fourth position in terms of both units sold and total revenue.
Since it’s release on November 14, several aspects of Call of Duty: Black Ops 7 haven’t quite managed to take off yet, and one of them is the game’s single player campaign which has been heavily criticized for not having checkpoints and not even letting you pause while the other is the presence of multiple AI generated assets in the game. And although it’s sales numbers are currently not nearly as much as what it’s predecessor’s has been, it’d be interesting to see whether the cause of the decreased sales is the title being available in Game Pass or just franchise fatigue.
