Wizards of the Coast has confirmed a new line of Final Fantasy-themed products for Magic: The Gathering, arriving this holiday season. Following the success of the initial Universes Beyond expansion earlier this year, the game developer is releasing four unique “Scene Boxes.” These boxes are designed to further connect the beloved Japanese role-playing series with the trading card game’s ecosystem. This announcement shows a clear push to make the most of one of the most popular crossover events in Magic’s recent history.
Each upcoming Scene Box will focus on a specific title from the Final Fantasy series. They will feature games that were not highlighted in the first wave of Commander Decks. The confirmed sets include themes dedicated to the original Final Fantasy I, the acclaimed Final Fantasy VIII, the popular Final Fantasy IX, and the more recent Final Fantasy XV. Each box will contain a selection of cards with new artwork for previously released Final Fantasy cards, completely new cards related to the represented game, and three additional Final Fantasy booster packs.
The original Final Fantasy expansion, released this year, quickly became one of the largest and most successful sets in Magic: The Gathering’s 30-year history. It immediately influenced the competitive Commander format with powerful cards like “Vivi Ornitier” and “Sephiroth, Fabled Soldier.” The expansion also created an active secondary market for rare collectibles, including the serialized “Traveling Chocobo” card. The new Scene Boxes aim to build on this initial interest by offering new options for players and collectors.
Players should note that the new cards in the holiday release will extend the existing Commander: Final Fantasy expansion. These cards will be legal for use in the Commander format, which is the game’s most popular casual format. However, they won’t be allowed in the rotating Standard format. The ongoing growth of the Final Fantasy line highlights Wizards of the Coast’s commitment to the Universes Beyond initiative. This initiative will continue with future crossovers, including properties like Avatar: The Last Airbender later this year and recently announced sets for Star Trek and The Hobbit in 2026.
